While the global economy has taken a serious hit due to the pandemic, there are some businesses thriving because of it. Countries are strictly observing quarantines and social-isolation. This has forced people to stay indoors. Therefore, many have had to work out of their homes remotely. This is beneficial for companies like Zoom Video Communications Inc., Microsoft, Google, etc. Zoom, which has a teleconferencing software, has seen a 300 percent surge in usage from before the crisis began. It is also the number one free application on the Apple Store. The demand for online applications has increased because of people who are stuck at home. Vodafone, an internet provider that operates in over 65 countries has reported a 50 percent surge in internet use. Online education and remote learning, gaming apps, and food delivery apps have become exponentially popular too.

Environmental Benefits

There have been some notable environmental benefits because of the coronavirus disease. According to satellite imageries of the European Space Agency, air pollution has drastically dropped as a result of most industries and factories shutting shop. They have observed a marked decline in nitrous oxide emissions from cars, power plants and factories in Italy, the country with the highest number of coronavirus related deaths. China’s carbon emissions were fewer than 200 million metric tons from the same period in 2019. An increase in companies opting for work from home policies has also led to less travel emissions across the world. Above all, this can be seen as a necessary respite for the earth to recuperate.

Solidarity across nations

Due to the effects of the coronavirus disease, there is increasing solidarity seen across nations. It has become seemingly clear that this virus does not discriminate based on religion or nationality. Even in these tough times, there is hope among people. To keep the spirit alive, people have taken to social media to talk about their experience with the disease. Funds like the COVID-Solidarity Response Fund for WHO has been set up to mobilize funds in places that critically need it. Moreover, the UN General Assembly unanimously adopted a resolution titled “Global solidarity to fight the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)“, highlighting the need for international cooperation to defeat the pandemic that is causing severe disruption to societies and economies.

With over 70,000 deaths around the world without any cure at the moment, there is fear and panic everywhere. Demand for supplies have been increasing while supplies are running out. Panic buying and hoarding has created supply shortages of essential goods like medicines and food items. Stock markets have not seen such a sharp decline since the 2008 financial crisis.

Many countries, especially the Chinese government have been criticized for the poor handling of the coronavirus crisis. This has created a lot of political unrest. A group of American lawyers have gone onto file a $20 trillion lawsuit in the U.S against the Chinese authorities claiming that they are using coronavirus as a biological weapon. Currently, Iran ranks seven among the largest confirmed cases in a country with over 60,000 cases of coronavirus. Due to a stringent U.S sanction, there is a limited import of medical supplies and food among other essentials into the country. Political systems around the world are badly affected due to suspensions in legislative activities, postponement of elections and deaths of politicians and decision-makers.

Racism

Xenophobia, racism, and prejudice have intensified due to the coronavirus crisis. There have been many incidents of discrimination especially against Chinese and other East and Southeast Asian people as the outbreak was first noted in Wuhan, China. Racist remarks and even abuses against Asians have been reported in countries including the United States and the United Kingdom with some reasoning it as justified retribution. U.S President Donald Trump infamously called the virus as the “Chinese Virus” which has been criticized widely for its racist and anti-Chinese connotation.

Setback in education

The coronavirus disease has created a setback in education due to closures of schools and educational institutes. Over 180 countries have implemented school closure nationally, which impacts 89 percent of the world’s student population. School examinations are postponed or canceled with some schools automatically promoting even their students to the next year. International examinations for higher education have also been canceled. In response to this, UNESCO is providing support to countries, including solutions for intensive distance learning.
