Advantages and Disadvantages of Coffee

Coffee has an illustrious history of mixing cultures, science, art, and even techniques. Like any additive in life, it has its benefits and its drawbacks. So here’s a closer look at the extent of how good or bad it is.

WHAT IS COFFEE?

Coffee is generally known as a brewed drink or beverage that is prepared from roasting coffee beans. These beans originated from a genus of plants known as Coffea. These berries undergo an extensive process to give us the result of a distinct aromatic coffee drink. The term “coffee” has different sources for its etymology. It is understood to be borrowed from the Dutch who called it koffie, the Turks who called it kahve, and the Arabs qahwah

Reportedly, the earliest evidence of coffee drinkers was in Yemen in the 15th century. Since then, their popularity has only skyrocketed across nations. So now coffee is grown in more than seventy countries. Primarily in equatorial zones called “the Bean Belt” of the Americas, Southeast Asia, Africa, and the Indian Subcontinent. These countries include Colombia, Brazil, Hawaii, Ethiopia, Vietnam, Peru, India, Mexico, etc. It is one of the world’s most profitable export crops. Similarly, it is among the most traded agricultural commodities in the world.

WHAT IS THE PROCESS OF OBTAINING IT?

There are different ways of making coffee but the process of getting the coffee beans is a standard process across regions.

Firstly, the coffee seeds are planted in large shaded areas. It needs to be constantly watered so that the soil remains moist. Hence, the ideal time to plant the seeds is in the winter season. Next comes the harvesting. In about three to four years the tree will bear a red-colored fruit called the coffee cherry. When these cherries get ripe, they are picked by hand or by a machine. After harvesting, the cherries are quickly processed either by the dry method or wet method. The dry method is where the cherries are spread out in the sun to dry. The wet method is where the pulp of the cherries is removed so that the bean is dried with only the skin left on. The fourth step is drying of the beans that were processed by the wet method. This is put into bags ready to be exported.

Before exporting comes the fifth step which is the milling of the coffee beans. This is the further processing of the beans in different stages. These processes are called hulling, polishing, grading, and sorting. These are now exported to different regions. Coffee tasting is done for testing the quality and taste of the coffee. There is a designated taster who uses her/his expertise to determine the characteristics and flaws of the coffee. Once the tasting ensures the quality of the product, it is then roasted into aromatic brown beans. Then there is grinding of the beans to get the most flavor out of them. There are different ways of grinding based on individual preferences. Finally, there is the process of brewing the beans to perfection for that perfect cup of coffee.
